Acknowledging their DIGNITY and right to participate in decisions affecting them

Recognise the POWER imbalance between the psychologist and their client
What does Justice mean in practice?
Understanding consequences for people when they experience discrimination and stereotyping

Show respect through actions and language;
not coercive or demeaning;

What does informed consent involve in practice?

Only when:
- Have client’s consent
- a legal obligation
- An immediate risk of harm to a person that can be averted
- Mandatory reporting (child abuse/neglect)

What is ‘ethical conduct’ and what does it bring to the profession of psychology?
- Basic rules that govern professional behaviour
- promotes consistency in the profession
- prevents psych relying on own judgement about right/wrong professional behaviour.
When might you not need to obtain fully informed consent?
If there’s a disaster situation, the psychologist may rely on own considered judgement as to whether to proceed with providing services without first obtaining fully informed consent.
