What are the five things that typeset words communicate?

What makes a typeface a strong design?
– Evenness of texture / color – Similar forms, but not identical – Strong system – Personality but not obtrusive (unless display typeface)
What is cap height?
The highest point of a capital letter in a type set
What is baseline?
The lowest point of a capital letter in a type set
What is vertical width?
The width of the vertical line(s) in a letter
What is horizontal width?
The horizontal width of the line(s) in a letter
What is contrast?
The difference in widths between horizontal and vertical line(s) in a letter
What is a stem?
The vertical base of a letter, such as E
What are brackets?
The curved connections between vertical and horizontal lines in a serifed letter
What is x-height?
The height of a lowercase x; usually 50-66% of the cap height
What is a counter?
The negative space in letterforms with holes in them (such as “e,” “o,” or “q”)
What are finishing serifs?
The serifs that finish a letter, such as the left serifs on an uppercase E, or the right serif on a lowercase “a”
