A

BDP I is more reliable than BDP II, and both are more reliable than MDD.

Reason: manic episodes are a strong symptom in BDP I characterization and diagnosis.

A

Merikangas 2007

  • Onset at younger age, before 25 years of age.
  • Lifetime risk for BDP I is 1%
  • Lifetime risk for BDP II is 1.1%
  • Lifetime risk for subthreshold depression is 2.4%
  • Severe episodes over 12 months: BDP I is 75% |BDP II is 69%
  • Comorbidities: 75% of BDP have psychiatric comorbidities

More common and less common

A

0-10 very low.
12-25 frequent.
25-50 another climb in the curve.
50+ plateau.

Usually 1-2 depressive episodes appear before mania.
