Week 1 - Neuro Drugs Flashcards
acetazolamide (Diamox)
reduces CSF in cases of hydrocephalus, inhibits carbonic anhydrase, first choice to decrease production of CSF
quabain
reduces CSF in cases of hydrocephalus, Na/K ATPase inhibitor
furosemide
reduces CSF in cases of hydrocephalus, inhibits Na/K transporter
chondroitinase
enzyme, degrades chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan (CSPG) - an inhibitor released by glial scar (astrocytes), promotes CNS plasticity
mannitol
treatment for cerebral edema, osmotic diuretic in blood, small sugar, 1-2g/kg, reduces CSF alread made - does not stop making or more CSF
surgery or shunt
treatment for hydrocephalus, reduces CSF and pressure
prednisone
given for MS (among other things), corticosteroid that reduces inflammation by decreasing amount of immune cell migration into CNS, prevents arachadonic acid release by phospholipase 2 (PLA2) which
methylprednisolone
given for MS, decreases expression of adhesion molecules VLA-4 and LFA-1
interferon B 1a (avonex)
given for MS, natural human protein made with genetic recombination, slows progression of MS, reduces MS relapses, believed to repair holes in blood-brain barrier, reduces antigen presenting, reduces T cell proliferation, alters cytokine expression, and restores suppressor function
