Allegory
A form of extended metaphor, in which objects, persons, and actions are representative of objects outside a narrative.
Alliteration
The repetition of initial sounds in neighboring words. Ex. Beowulf bode in the burg
Assonance
A form of alliteration in which the vowel sound, not consonant sounds, are repeated. Ex: fleet feet sweep by sleeping geeks
Consonance
A form of alliteration, where consonant sounds are repeated. Ex: dark deep dread crept in
Allusion
A brief reference, explicit or implicit, to a person place or event, or to another literary work or passage.
Anagram
Word or phrase made by transposing the letters
Analogy
The comparison of items to highlight some form semantic similarity.
Anaphora
Repetition of words/phrases in the beginning of neighboring clauses, there by emphasizing them. Mad world! Mad Kings! Mad composition!
Anastrophe
Figure of speech in which the usual word order is inverted so that emphasis is placed on the out of place word.
Anthropomorphism
To attribute human characteristics to non human entities
Aphorism
A brief saying embodying a moral, a concise statement of a principle or precept given in pointed words. Ex: lost time is never found again.
Apostrophe
Rhetorical device in which a speaker or writer breaks off and directs speech to an imaginary person or abstract quality or idea. Often used to convey extreme emotion. EX: where o death is thy sting where o death is thy victory.
