Week 1 Limits of Stability Flashcards
what is the limit of stability
this is the maximum sway in any direction where the COM remains within the BOS.
how much postural sway do you have side to side
about 8 degrees
what is the center of pressure, where is it usually
the location of the ground reaction force vector and the sum of external forces on the plantar surface of the foot. this is usually where we tie our shoelaces.
TF: starting posture does not matter for limits of stability
false, it greatly matters
TF: shoes matter
true
what are some ways we can map devices
force plates, pressure mats, in shoe sensors.
in insole mapping, what color shows more pressure
red is more pressure.
how do force plate tracings change between young and old people
in young people, it is localized and symmetrical. in the elderly, its a little erratic and more sway there. They may fall or lose balance.
how much sway do we have forward and backwards
forward is 8 degrees and backwards is 4.5 degrees.
what is reaction time
how quickly they can move
what is movement velocity
the speed of the movement
what is endpoint excursion
the traveled distance on an attempt
what is maximum excursion
the furthest distance they got
what is directional control
straight or accuracy
can we tell if a patient has something like MS or is healthy from a force plate limit of stability test
yes. the healthy individual will have a clear chart, whereas the MS person has a sloppy chart.
can we work on interventions with the limits of stability testing
yes, we can start by saying ok you couldn’t reach target 5, lets start slowly working back towards target 5 at slow and steady distances.
what is adaptation
adjustment of a sense organ to the intensity or quality of stimulation. modification of an organism, so it can fit in environment. Also, serves a function for survival
what is a compensation
learning how to develop work arounds for a task, function or process. adapt to the environment.
what is remediation
restoring function that was lost.
