Define mental health
A state encompassing how a person thinks, feels and behaves, and which focuses on social and emotional wellbeing.
Subjectively defined/represented by

Define recovery
Being able to create and live a meaningful and contributing life in a community of choice with or without the presence of mental health issues

Explain trauma-informed care
Trauma-Informed Care recognizes the presence of trauma symptoms and acknowledges the role trauma may play in an individual’s life, mental health, and recovery.
A nurse can practice trauma informed care by
* asessing for the impact of trauma and recognising this impact
* putting systems in place to prevent re-traumatisation in their care
* practice with a strength based approach to empower consumers
* establishing respectful therapeutic relationships and practicing patient centred care
* allowing consumers to guide their own recovery
* taking time with patients to make them feel heard
* reinforcing the consumer has rights and responsibilities
* Setting and respecting clear professional boundaries
* creating a validating and affirming atmosphere when they provide care
Identify and describe trauma informed care principles
Safety - ensuring physical and emotional safety through environment and practice
Choice - ensuring that the consumer has choice, control and autonomy in all aspects of their care where they are competent
Collaboration - working with the consumer to reach their defenition of recover and supporting their involvement
Trustworthiness - ensuring you practice consistently, clearly, so your consumers can depend on you/don’t feel abandoned. only restraining when absolutely necessary
Empowerment - strength based recovery approach, focus on skill building and empowering consumers
Describe the role and significance of the mental health act 2014
- Protects the rights of a person with a mental health condition
- Ensure the best possible treatment and care in the least possible restrictive environment
- and when restrictive treatment is requires ensure it is completed in a safe manner (eg. guidelines on restraint and seclusion)
- Provides for care, treatment and protection for people who are experiencing extreme distress, and are acutely unwell with a mental illness and who do not or cannot consent to treatment.
Explain the purpose of the mental health act in safeguarding consumers rights in mental health
Mental health tribunal and complaints comissioner
* MHT comprised of - legal practiioners, pasychiatrists, registered medical practitioners, community members
*allows patients to apply for review or revoke of treatment orders
- MHCC commissioner - complaint management and quality control
- safeguards patient and practitioner rights by conducting investigations, and resolving complaints
Advanced statements
* ensure patients are as empowered as possible
* patents are encouraged to write down the type of care they would prefer should they not be able to consent to treatment
* encourages patients to appoint a nominated person (similar to power of attourney) - mental health team needs to consult with this person to decide what treamtnet is in the best interest of the patient should they not be competent
Consent for non-psychiatric treatment
* is the patient competent to consent to any general medical or surgical treatment they might be proposed?
* if so, has the same right to consent/not consent as anyone else despite being under a treatment order
Identify and explain the three compulsory orders
If a person diagnosed with a mental illness needs treatment to prevent serious deterioration or to prevent them from causing serious harm, a compulsory order for treatment without consent/despite refusal might be required
there is no less restrictuve means reasonably available
Assessment Order
* least restrictive
* 24 hours
* can be made by any registered medical health practitioner or mental health practitioner
* allows restriction of person to conduct a mental health assessment if they appear to have a mental illness
Temporary Treatment Order
* made by authorised psychiatrist
* up to 28 days
* allows detainment for immediate treatment in a person with a mental illness
Treatment Order
* most restrictive
* made by mental health tribunal after psychiatrist files an application
* max 12 months (community) 6 months (inpatient)
* allows detainment for immediate treatment in a person with a mental illness
All orders require
* certain criteria to be met
* certain people to be notified
* verbal and written information of rights provided to patients
* patients can request opinion of second psychiatrist over validity of order
* ability of timeframes to be adjusted/revoked
all can be used as a community or inpatient order
