What is a theory?
A statement of the relationship between a set of concepts
What is a concept?
an abstract idea that allows us to see the commonalities between sets of related real world phenomenon or processes
What is a deviance?
the violation of ideas about what is regarded as acceptable behavior, breaking norms
What are social norms?
the rules that govern social behavior, ideas about what is acceptable and unacceptable
What is social control?
the various means used by a society to bring its uncooperative members back into line, used to regulate behavior
What are norms?
enforced through the application of sanctions
What are values?
society’s ideas about what is good and desirable
What is a social sanction?
any means by which conformity to socially approved standards is enforced, can be positive or negative and formal or informal
Examples of formal negative sanctions
imprisonment, being fired
Examples of formal positive sanctions
job promotion, Nobel Peace Prize
Examples of informal negative sanctions
being grounded, bullying
Examples of informal positive sanctions
hugs, compliments
What are folkways?
norms relating to convention or custom
What are mores?
norms relating to a society’s standards of proper moral conduct
What are taboos?
when the value is so sacred to us as a society that breaking a more would cause an extreme response from society
