Week 1: digital world Flashcards
Digital Information
Information stored as number
Text
letters are converted into ASCII code numbers for digital storage
Pictures
Pictures are broken down into pixels (picture elements), each pixel is assigned a number that tells it what colour it should be. The combination of pixels allows an image to be captured and stored digitally.
Digital System
Information technology that captures, analyzes, outputs, and stores information digitally.
Such that Value digit information output > Value Captured data
Benefits
easier to store, easier to share, exact copies are easier to make, simultaneous access to digital information, information can more easily be protected using encryption
Consequences
information can be copied by people given access making plagiarism easier, personal/ sensitive data can be leaked, data is easier to modify without a trace so content integrity is a concern, floods of data from over-use can be difficult for information technology to organise.
Digital-first
Our world is digital-first, meaning people prefer to capture information digitally.
