Define organisation
Social entity that is goal-directed and deliberately structured

When something is ‘deliberately structed’, what does this mean?
Tasks are divided, and responsibility for their performance is assigned to organisation members
Define efficiency
Amount of resources (eg raw materials, money, people) used to produce desired volume of output
Define effectiveness
Degree to which organisation achieves goal
Define performance
Organisations ability to attain goal by using resources in efficient, effective manner measured against pre-set standards
Define management
attainment of organisational goals in an effective and efficient manner through planning, organising, leading and controlling organisational resources

Outline the 4 management functions
Planning - concerned with defining goals for future performance and how to obtain them
Organising - involves assigning tasks, group tasks into depts., delegating authority and allocating resources
Leading - using influence to motivate employees to achieve goals
Controlling - monitoring employees activity, keeping the organisation on track for goals and making corrections
Define conceptual management skills
Cognitive ability to think strategically
To see the organisation as a whole and the relationship among its parts
Define human management skills
Refers to managers’ ability to work with and through other people and the work effectively as part of a group
Define technical management skills
Understanding of proficiency in the performance of specific tasks eg manufacturing or finance
Describe the three informational manager roles
Monitor - seeks out and receives information
Disseminator - shares info internally
Spokesperson - shares info externally
Describe the three interpersonal manager roles
Figurehead - performs ceremonial duties
Leader - directs and motivates
