week 1, concept 1 : Terminology Flashcards
biochemistry deals with _
- bio-chemical reactions
- that occur in biological systems (ie. the body)
organic chemistry deals with_
carbon compounds
Chemistry is the study of _
matter
Matter is _
anything that has mass and takes up space.
Matter can change from one form to another.
In a chemical change (chemical reaction), substances are_
used up and others are formed in their place.
An example of a chemical change (chemical reaction) is_
- propane gas burning in air
propane and oxygen are converted to
carbon dioxide and water
In a physical change, matter _
does not lose its identity.
A common physical change is _
a change of state.
An example of a physical change is_
- ice melting
ice is solid water, when it melts it is liquid water
Its still H2O, there has been no chemical reaction, simply change in state
Fact is_
A statement based on direct experience
example of a fact_
iron is hard
- this is observable
- can establish based on our experience
Hypothesis is_
A statement that is proposed, without actual proof, to explain a set of facts or their relationship.
hypothesis is_
- something that is testable
- one is able to test in order to prove
Theory is_
The formulation of an apparent relationship among certain observed phenomena, which has been verified to some extent.
a theory is_
- similar to hypothesis except that we have a stronger belief in it
- because more evidence supports it
(although if we find new evidence that conflicts with the theory it can be alter or rejected)
