Expanding OT community-based services helps with what four things?

History of Service in the Community
Consolation house: using occupations to enable return to productive living (garden, grass lawn, workshops)
Hull house: for individuals to become self-sufficient (workshop included baskets, needlework, rugs)
Community health & interventions
-any combination of educational, social and environmental supports for behavior conducive to health
-may be directed towards individuals, families or groups, including a community
Community
A specific group of people, often living in the same geographical area, who share a common culture, values and norms, are arranged in a social structure according to relationships, which the community has developed over a period of time
Community-based practice
-A broad array of health related services provided in the community such as prevention and health promotion, acute and chronic medical care, habituation and rehab, direct and indirect service provision

Population

Four components or phases
1. community identity

Retirement
-causes changes in daily occupations and schedules, changes in social relationships etc
- average age is 65 for men and 62 for women
- average age of retirement has increased over time (used to be 57)
Goal of OT in retirement
determining aptitudes, developing interests and skills, and selecting appropriate vocational pursuits
Changes in health status
-about 80% of older Americans have at lease one chronic health condition
Relocating in later life
- moving and adapting
- choosing not to relocate and age in place
- move in with family
- move to ALF or long term care
Practice areas for OTs working with older adults
Hospitals, acute rehab in-patient, home care, assisted living centers, skilled nursing facilities (SNF)
