Week 1 anatomy: Pericardium and superior mediastinum Flashcards
Identify the structure

L vagus nerve
Identify the structure. What does it branch off of?

L recurrent larygeal nerve
Branches from the L vagus nerve and loops around the aorta
Identify the structure. What is its function?

Superior Vena Cava (SVC).
Drains the blood from all the regions superior to the diaphragm except the heart and lungs
What structure ends here in the pericardium? What is its function?

Inferior vena cava
Drains blood from the abdominopelvic cavity and lower extremities
What structure ends here in the pericardium?

L superior pulmonary vein. There is a matching R superior pulmonary vein on the other side.
What structure ends here in the pericardium?

L inferior pulmonary vein. There is a matching R inferior pulmonary vein.
Identify the structure. What type of vessel is this?

Pulmonary trunk.
An artery carrying deoxygenated blood away from the heart to the lungs.
Identify the structure. What is its function? Where does it originate?

L phrenic nerve.
The L and R phrenic nerves originate at C3, 4, and 5 and provide motor innervation to the diaphragm and sensory innervation to the parietal pleura and pericardium.
What parts of the heart form the anterior (or sternocostal) surface?
R atrium and R ventricle
What parts of the heart form the diaphragmatic surface?
R and L ventricles
What parts of the heart form the L pulmonary surface?
L ventricle
What parts of the heart form the R pulmonary surface?
R atrium
What are the layers of the pericardium from external to internal?
Fibrous pericardium
Serous pericardium (divided into two layers)
- Parietal (fused to fibrous pericardium)
- Visceral (aka epicardium) lays directly against the heart
Identify the structure.

Trachea
Identify the blue structure.

L brachiocephalic vein.
The L and R brachiocephalic veins join to form the SVC.
Identify the structures.

Subclavian veins
Identify the structure. What does it connect?

Ligamentum arteriosum
Connects the aorta and the pulmonary trunk.
Identify the structure.

Arch of the Azygos vein
What structure is the green arrow pointing at?

Arch of the aorta
What structure is the green arrow pointing at?

Brachiocephalic trunk.
