Week 1 Flashcards
Coronal Plane
Divides into ANTERIOR and POSTERIOR. (Front and Back)
Horizontal Plane
Divides into DORSAL and VENTRAL. (Top and Bottom).
Sagittal Plane
Divides in LEFT and RIGHT.
Lateral
Away from the midline.
Medial
Close to the midline.
Structure
Tells us about the morphology or form of things.
Function
Tells us about activity.
Invasive
Typically breaks the skin.
Spatial Resolution
How precisely can you determine WHERE something is occurred. Higher the spatial resolution, the more precise. Smaller the region, higher the spatial resolution.
Temporal Resolution
How precisely can you determine WHEN something happened. Higher the temporal resolution, more precise. Smaller the interval, higher the temporal resolution.
Correlation vs. Causation
Two things can be correlated but that doesn’t mean X causes Y. Or it possibly could be a coincidence. To determine whether X cause Y, take away X because Y should stop happening if X was the cause.
Behavioural Response.
Psychophysics - how the physical stuff in the world influences our brain and our response.
Stimulating/disrupting activity
Messes with the underlying activity of the brain which we can use to observe what affect that has on a specific behaviour that is being studied. Also known as virtual or temporary lesion.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
Zap current through the coils which sends a magnetic pulse into the brain, which disrupts the activity due to the brain using electric currents. Can either do a single or repetitive pulse.
Permits casual inference about the necessity of a specific brain region for performing a given task.
fMRI Subtraction Method
Averaging together all of the images during the ‘on’ stage and subtracting it from the ‘off’ stages.
