Week 1 Flashcards
Cyanobacteria
~ 3.5 billion years ago. Carried about by photosynthesis releasing oxygen into the atsmosphere
Stromatolites
Created by cyanobacteria layering on top of each other. Can be seen in Western Australia
What is biology?
The study of life
What characterizes life?
There are 5 characteristics:
1) Structural Organization - made up of cells
2) Generative Processes - grow and develop, reproduce and pass on genetic material
3) Metabolic Processes - nutrition uptake, nutrient processing, waste elimination
4) Control Processes - Coordinate and regulate metabolic activities, maintain homeostatisis
5) Responsive Processes - rapid response to stimuli, individual adaptation, population adaptation (evolution)
What are the two types of organisms?
Unicellular and multicellular
What is the hierarchical organization of multicellular organism?
atom > molecule > cell > tissue > organ > organ system > organism
What are the types of reproduction?
Asexual and sexual
What are the types of metabolic processes?
Photosynthesis and Cellular respiration
Photosynthesis is ANABOLIC –> uses energy to build more complex molecules from simpler ones
Cellular Respiration is CATABOLIC –> releases energy through the breakdown of complex molecules into simpler ones
What is cytology?
The study of cells
What is the broad term for cell parts?
Organelles
What are the biological molecules built from carbon?
Nucleic acids, Proteins, Carbohydrates, and Lipids
What do Ribosomes do?
Assemble amino acids to make proteins
