The Early Republic
began with the fall of the kingdom in 509BC and ended in 264BC with the first Punic War
The later republic
began in 264BC with the first Punic War until the establishment of the Roman Empire in 27BC under Augustus
Consuls
Chief magistrates are chosen by a people’s assembly for a one year term in office.
praetor urbanus
a collega minor established in 367BC
later held imperium subject to the veto of the consuls

The Eastern Roman Empire
Began in 284 AD
Diocletian was the first eastern Roman emperor
At the center of importance in the Empire with the establishment of Constantinople in 324 AD
It fell to the Turks in 1453AD
Archaic period

Religion
Courts- ordinary citizens and prosecution left to injured party
Coincided with Kingdom and the early republic

Traditional rules thought to be the will of the gods.
Considered to be fas, or rules dictating the relationship between gods and men.

the male head of the family, liable for damage caused by persons under his authority

plebeian popular assembly established in 471 BC
allowed them to make laws that only apply to them
The law of the Twelve Tables
plebeians demanded that law is recorded for legal certainty.
451 BC, the Decemviri Legibus Scribundis was commissioned and promulgated creating the twelve tables of law
Leges Licinae Sextiae
Established in 367BC that allowed plebeians access to the consulate.
Lex Hortensia
a law passed in 287BC that stated that resolutions passed by the plebeian assemblies would be binding on all Roman Citizens
