- prevention of constipation after pregnancy
docusate sodium: dosage
- 50–400 mg in 1–4 divided doses.

- give with a full glass of water
- only use short term or else may cause electrolyte imbalance, dehydration, dependence
- teach pt to walk more, drink more fluids, and ingest more fiber

ferrous sulfate: indications
- to treat or prevent iron deficiency anemia
ferrous sulfate: dosage
- 60–100 mg elemental iron daily.

- n/v
- constipation
- dark stools
- epigastric pain
- dizziness
- HA
ferrous sulfate: nursing implications
- take 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after
- teach pt that stools may become dark black or green
Rubella Vaccination: Indication
- administered at least 28 days before pregnancy or after childbirth or abortion to women whose Ab screen shows they are not immune to rubella
- prevents rubella infection and possible severe congenital defects in the fetus during a subsequent pregnancy

- 0.5 mL subQ
rubella vaccination: ADRs
- transient stinging at site
- fever
- lymphadenopathy
- arthralgia
- transient arthritis
rubella vaccination: nursing implications
- refridgerate vials
- reconstitute only with diluent supplied
- use immediately after reconstitution and discard if not used in 8 hours
- check with provider before giving near time of administration of RhoD immunoglobulin
- avoid pregnancy at least 4 weeks after vaccination

Rho (D) Immune Globulin: Indications
- given to Rh negative women who have been exposed to Rh positive blood by:
- delivering an Rh+ infant
- aborting an Rh+ infant
- undergoing chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, or intraabdominal trauma while carrying an Rh+ infant
- receiving inadvertent infusion of Rh+ blood
Rho (D) Immune Globulin: Dosage
- 1 std dose (300 mcg) administered IM:
- at 28 weeks of pregnancy and w/in 72 hours of delivery of Rh+ infant
- w/in 2 hours after termination of pregnancy of 13 wks or more of gestation
- 1 microdose (50 mcg) w/in 72 hours after termination of pregnancy of less than 13 weeks of gestation

- local pain at IM site
- fever
Rho (D) Immune Globulin: Nursing Implications
- type and Ab screen of mother’s blood and cord blood type to determine need for medication
- mother must be Rh- and negative for Rh- Ab
- infant must be Rh+
- drug is administered to mom, not infant
- administer in deltoid

- given at 27-36 weeks
- or as soon as possible after birth

- administer in deltoid if possible
- administer before woman is discharged if she did not receive during pregnancy
