The internet is a set of networks connected by routers that are configured to communicate among a variety of network transmission technologies. (a network of networks)
Why is computer networking so complicated?
varHW&SW,
many terms & new
- Variety of hardware that must communicate with each other (legacy, modern)
- Variety of software (software must be interoperable)
- Variety of protocols/standards
- Confusing terminology/acronyms
- industry re-defines or changes terminology from academia
- new terms invented continuously
- Wireless/mobility issues add even more complexity
RFC
RFC stands for Request For Comments or Repository For Comments.
It is the place to find and post the latest adopted standards for networking.
-The first “open-source” community.
IETF
ETF stands for Internet Engineering Task Force.
A non-profit organization that produces technical documents that influence the way people design, use, and manage the Internet.
