Week 1 Flashcards
What is the purpose of an oral airway?
To maintain the airway and prevent the tongue from falling back over the airway
What state must your patient be in to use the oral airway?
They must be unconscious to ensure they have no gag reflex
What is the purpose of a BVM?
To send air into a patient’s body who is not breathing to ensure their tissues remain oxygenated
When attaching a BVM to an oxygen source, how high (L/min) should the flow rate of oxygen be?
The highest level possible
How many breaths should you deliver per minute to a patient who needs a BVM?
10-12
What is acidemia?
Increased ability of Hgb to release oxygen to the tissues
What is alkalemia?
The decreased ability of Hgb to release oxygen to the tissues
When would oxygen therapy be contraindicated?
When someone has a high SpO2 or uncontrolled administration in COPD because it may cause hypo ventilation due to decreased c02 levels in the body
What are early signs of hypoxia?
Confusion, anxiety, restlessness, increased BP
What are late signs of hypoxia?
Cyanosis
List some high-flow oxygen devices:
Venturi mask, large-volume nebulizer and blender mask
List some low-flow oxygen devices:
Nasal cannula, simple nonrebreather mask, and partial nonrebreather mask
What is the purpose of an incentive spirometer?
To prevent pneumonia following surgery and allows patient to deep breathe
What is the purpose of deep breathing and coughing?
To prevent pneumonia in patients who have just had a surgery or have difficulty with chest expansion
How do you participate in “controlled coughing”
Take 2 deep breaths in through nose and exhale through pursed lips, then take a 3rd deep breath in, hold it for 3 seconds and then cough fully for 2 or 3 consecutive coughs without inhaling in between
