Week 1&2 Flashcards
Production Sound
Skill and craft of recording live dialogue on set during principle photography.
Includes blend of creative & technical, problem solving, compromising in environment not conductive to recording any kind of room audio, room tones, field recording, live sound on set
Early film
everyday sounds missing, use of music
Inventing Sound- Major Players
RCA, Western Electric, AT&T, Warner Bros
two formed corporation called “vita phone”
Problems with early sound
big & noisy, kept in own soundproof room, lead to invention of “boom”
Best Sound on a movie set
“sound that is not heard”, sound supporting character, believable
Six Layers of a Soundtrack
- ) Dialogue and Narration: edited smoothly, placed in foreground
- ) Hard SFX: advance plot & realism
- ) Temporary Music: well chosen music, eliminate need for background & natural sound. Used for pacing while waiting for score
- ) Backgrounds: often placed before natural sounds, Random noises in a prerecorded background appear to be in sync.
- ) Natural Sound: added to action that appears to be missing audio
- ) Music: Last part added, choice changes based on licensing
Deforest
created audio tube, record sound on film using light , lead to phono film system
Dynamic Microphones
“transducers”, convert one form of energy into another corresponding form of energy, use electromagnetic induction, uses moving coil, suspended between two magnets, used a lot in music
Condenser Microphone
1.) operate on electrostatic principle
2.) Capsule consists of thin moveable diaphragm front plate & stationary backplate
condenser refers to electrical device capable of storing electrical charge, DC power supply of 48 volts PHANTOM POWER, sound waves hit moveable diaphragm front plate, creates charge
Polar Patterns
Shows mics sensitivity w/ output level @ various angles, directly in front of mic known as on-axis
2 Types W/ Mic’s Response
- ) Omni-directional
2. ) directional
Polar Pattern Types
- ) Cardiod: total on-axis (in front) response & rejects sounds in rear
- ) Hypercardiod: Front on-axis response w/ some rear pick up (dialogue)
- ) Supercardiod: Front on-axis w/ less near pick-up
- ) Bi-directional (Figure 8): Total front on-axis, total rear, no side
Booming
operators at rehearsal, shotgun mics very directional, place boom in crook of thumb & forefinger when moving, lets director know if wild lines needed
Utility Sound Techniciaen
equipment matinance, mics have windscreens
Audimated Dialogue Replacement
post production dialogue from actors
