Week 1-2 Flashcards
Define “census”
A method of obtaining information from a population.
Information is obtained systematically.
Define “population”
A complete set of elements grouped together by common characteristics.
Define “parameter”
A statistic based on the data from a population.
Define “sampling frame”
A complete list of all the items in the population.
- What are the 2 types of sampling frames?
* Explain
1) Perfect sampling frame - Each element in the population is listed only once and no other irrelevant or extra elements are listed.
2) Incomplete sampling frame - Not including all the available individuals from the population.
List 4 types of problems in a sampling frame
1) Missing elements
2) Foreign elements
3) Duplicate entries
4) Group of clusters - (sampling frame defined at group level instead of individual elements)
Define “sample survey”
The method of obtaining information from a few individuals (a sample)
- Define “sampling unit”
* What are the 2 types of sampling units?
A sampling unit is a single unit from a group, divided for the purpose of sampling.
1) Primary sampling units(PSU) - chosen at the first stage of sampling
2) Secondary sampling units(SSU) - chosen at the secondary stage of sampling
List 5 advantages of sampling
1) Low cost
2) Less work
3) Greater accuracy
4) Less time
5) Feasibility
List 5 data collection methods
1) Physical observation and measurement
2) Personal interview
3) Mail inquiry
4) Web-based inquiry
5) Public records
List the principle steps of a sampling survey (7 steps)
1) Method of measurement
2) The sampling frame
3) Selection of sample
4) The pre-test
5) Organization of the field of work
6) Summary and analysis of the data
7) Information gain for future surveys
