What bird is this?
Ring-Necked Dove
- Males and females look alike
- Passerine
- Almost everywhere in South Africa (woodland, farmland, gardens, savanna etc)
- Usually found alone or in pairs (monogamous nesting)
- Sometimes larger flocks of hundreds around food/water sources
- Roost in trees at night and forage on ground in day
- Mainly eat seeds with fruit, nectar, leaves, and invertebrates (Granivore)
- Heads bob back and forth with each little step
- Head bob = so each eye sees two nearly simultaneous views and can thereby give an approximation to binocular vision.
- Flight pattern = flapping up a steep gradient then spiral down with wings and tail spread out
- Sunbathe
- Pairs mate for life
- Female constructs the nest, taking about 3-8 days
- 2 to 10m above ground
- Nest is a small platform of twigs, grass, roots and sometimes pine needles
- Typically placed in the fork of a tree, surrounded by dense foliage
- Both parents incubate the eggs and take care of the chicks after hatching
- Chicks dependent on parents for approximately 12 days after hatching
What bird is this?
Black-Headed Oriole
Males = very bright yellow, black hood, and black on wings and tail
Females = duller in colour, same as juveniles but they have white streaks on throat
It breeds in much of sub-Saharan Africa
Inhabits dry tropical forests, especially acacia and broad-leaved woodlands, and dense shrubland areas
Omnivore = Fruit, nectar, and insects.
Forage in shrubs and trees to find the insects and fruit
Nectar can be extracted from such plants as agaves, aloes, hibiscus, lilies, and other tubular flowers.
Hang upside down to get nectar from flowers
Flight pattern = slightly swooping, fast and direct
Water bath
Breeding Season = May-August
Monogamous Pairs
The male will fly around a female and tilt his head up and sing.
The female hooded oriole lays three to five eggs in a woven basket nest made of plant fibres.
Nest has an entrance at the top and it hangs from branches of a tree.
Female assembles nest in 3-6 days
