week 1 Flashcards
homeostasis
Homeostasis is the state of steady internal conditions maintained by living things.
gross anatomy
is the study of the larger structures of the body, those visible without the aid of magnification
histology
the microscopic study of tissues
anatomical position
physiology
the function of the structures (anatomy) of the body. it is the scientific study of the chemistry and physics of the structures of the body and the ways in which they work together to support the functions of life.
the 6 levels of structural organization in an organism
atoms
molecules
cells
tissues
organs
organ systems
organisms
Integumentary System
Encloses internal
body structures
Site of many
sensory receptors
ex: hair, skin, nails
Skeletal System
supports the body
allows for movement (along with muscular system)
ex: bones, joints, and cartilage
muscular system
skeletal muscles
tendons
helps maintain body temperature
allows for movement (along with skeletal system)
Nervous System
detects and processes sensory information
activates body responses
ex: brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves
endocrine system
secretes hormones and chemicals that signal and regulate body processes
ex: pituitary, thyroid, pancreas, adrenal glands, testes, ovaries
cardiovascular system
delivers oxygen and nutrients to tissues, equalizes temperature in body
heart, blood vessels
lymphatic system
returns fluid to blood, defends against pathogens
ex: thymus, lymph nodes, spleen, lymphatic vessels
Respiratory System
Removes carbon dioxide from the
body * Delivers oxygen
to blood
nasal passages, trachea, lungs
digestive system
Processes food for
use by the body * Removes wastes from undigested
food
stomach, liver, gall bladder, small and large intestines
Urinary system
Controls water balance in the
body * Removes wastes from blood and
excretes them
kidneys, bladder
reproductive systems
male and female: Produces sex hormones and
gametes
male: Delivers gametes
to female
female: supports embryo, feeds baby
mammary glands, ovaries, uterus, epididymus, testes
