Week 1 Flashcards
what is ecology
the study of relationships between living things and their environment
what are abiotic factors
abiotic factors are physical conditions of the habitat which allows organisms to grow, reproduce and survive
what are biotic factors
biotic factors are living organisms that live in the environment
intraspecific relationship
living together in a group which increases survival rate
interspecific relationship
Organisms of two species use the same limited resource and have a negative impact on each other
symbiosis
a relationship in which two organisms live in close association over a long period of time
mutualism
Both species benefit from the interaction
cooperation
Each species benefits but the presence of one is not essential to the survival of the other
commensalism
One organism benefit and the other is not affected
amensalism
One species inhibits the other
parasitism
Parasites obtain food by living in host organisms
producers
autotrophic, primary energy sources
consumers
heterotrophic, feed on other organisms
detritivores
eat decomposing organic matter
decomposers
absorb nutrients from dead plants and animals
