Week 1 Flashcards
What is health equity
All people (individuals groups and communities) are able to live with dignity and reach their full health potential without unearned disadvantage from social ,economic, and environmental conditions
What is a health inequity
Systematic persistent differences in health, health outcomes, and life trajectories that vary along gradients. They’re unfair, unearned, human cause and therefore changeable.
What is privilege
An unfair, unearned advantage because of who you happen to be. It does not relate to effort.
What is oppression
An unearned disadvantage, the opposite of privilege
What is important to consider when we talk about inequity
Inequities are not inevitable or mysterious, they have causes and we should not place blame on the individuals that are suffering, we need to remember the system of oppression and privilege and acknowledge that it is human caused and changeable.
