Week 1 Flashcards
What are descriptive statistics used for?
Descriptive statistics are used to summarise the characteristics of a sample or dataset, such as a variable’s mean, standard deviation or range.
What does inferential statistics employ?
Inferential statistics employs techniques to relate variables in a dataset (correlation, regression analysis)
What are descriptive statistics?
Descriptive statistics focuses directly on summarising and presenting data, tables and data visualisation portray the data, examples of charts include, histograms, bar charts, scatter plots and line graphs.
What are descriptive measures?
Descriptive measures are used to summarise data. Descriptive measures are commonly divided into two parts: measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and measures of variability (variance, standard deviation, range).
What are inferential statistics?
Inferential statistics deals with the selection and use of sample data to produce information about the larger population from which the sample is selected.
What is the role of probability?
Probability theory is the study of likelihood or chance. Probability is also the connection between descriptive and inferential statistics.
What are statistics good for?
Describing a Complex World,
Forecasting Trends, Capturing Relationships, Informing Decision Making and Policy, Evaluating Decisions and Policies!
What is population, parameter, sample and statistic?
Population is the set of all elements of interest in a particular study. Parameter is a summary measure for a population. Sample is a subset of the population. Statistic is a summary measure for a sample.
