What are expressed powers?
Powers specifically listed in the Constitution.
What clause provides Congress with implied powers?
The necessary and proper clause.
Type of law forbidden by the Constitution which criminalizes actions that took place in the past but were legal at the time:
Ex post facto laws
What is an indirect tax?
Tax levied on one person but passed on to another for payment to the government.
Type of forbidden law that punishes a person without trial:
Bill of Atainder
Tax that individuals pay directly to the government:
Direct tax
What is a writ of habeas corpus?
A court order that forces the police to present a person in court to face charges
Amount in which the governments expenses exceed its revenue:
Deficit
What is a subpoena?
A legal document that requires a person to testify in court.
Explain the war powers resolution, why it was passed and what power it gives congress:
Created to limit the power of the president as a result of the Vietnam War.
Clause that allows congress to regulate interstate commerce:
Commerce Clause
Be able to name and explain congress’s three main roles in military affairs:
Congress can declare war, create and fund an army/navy, and shares the power to maintain the nationial guard with the states.
What role does congress play in copyrights and patents and why did they feel this was important?
Congress issues copyright and patent laws.
To protect inventors and writers rights and promote the progress of science and the arts.
Provide two examples of limits on Congressional power:
Congress can’t suspend the writ of habeas corupus
Congrss can’t pass a Bill of Attainder
Congress can’t pass ex post facto laws
