Def. Connotative Meaning
Implied/Interpreted Meaning of a Message
Def. Encode
Words, terms and inflections that the sender hopes the receiver will understand.
Def. Physical Noise or Interference
A person or thing creating noise that interferes with the receiver’s ability to receive a message.
Def. Psychological Noise/Interference
Something that the receiver is thinking about or processing that prevents the receiver from receiving a message.
Def. Semantic Noise/ Interference
Where messages are lost due to language or terms used not being understood by the receiver.
Def. Decode
When the receiver successfully receives a message.
Def. Feedback
Perceivable response to a sender’s message. Can be verbal or nonverbal, a combination of the two. A person can also choose not to give feedback.

The process of creating meaning through symbolic interaction.
Symbols
Represent things, people, ideas and events in ways that make communication possible.
Def. Linear Communication
Similar to a tennis match. Information is passed between sender and receiver(s) with each side having individualized experiences and reactions to the information shared while both sending and receiving information.

Biological factors that interfere with communication.

Depicts a model in which people send and receive messages simultaneously.

When the people involved are part of close relationships and treat each other as unique individuals.

When larger, more permanent groups work collectively to achieve goals.

When the group has become too large for all members to contribute at one time. One or more members deliver their remarks to the remaining members, who act as an audience.

Consists of messages that are transmitted to large, widespread audiences via electronic and print media such as magazines, television, radio, websites and blogs.

A collection of platforms that allow every day people to post, view, comment on, and share content electronically.

The tendency to transmit messages without considering the consequences (especially online.)
