Week 1 Flashcards
What are antibiotics?
Substance, produced by one microorganism or produced wholly or partly by chemical synthesis, which in low concentrations inhibits growth of other microorganisms
What does Bactericidal mean?
Antibiotics that kill bacteria
What does bacteriostatic mean?
Antibiotics that inhibit the reproduction and the growth of bacteria
What are the three sources of antibiotics ?
Microorganisms
Synthesis
Semi synthesis
B lactam antibiotics are 3 kinds what are they?
Penicillins, Clavams, Cephalosoporins
What happens in circular muscle contraction?
Lumen becomes narrower and longer
What happens 8n longitudinal muscle contraction?
Lumen becomes shorter and fatter
What happens in mucularis mucosae contraction?
Change in absorptive and secretory are of mucosa
Name 4 functions of the liver?
- Xenobiotic detoxification and metabolism
- bile production
- Decomposittion of erythrocytes and bilirubin excretion
- Hormone production
what hormones are released by the liver?
- thrombopoetin
2. Angiotensin
what is jaundice?
A symptom of underlying disease of physiological dysfunction, indicated by an elevation of bilirubin above normal limit
what are the 4 kinds of jaundice?
- Neonatal
- Haemolytic Jaundice
- Hepatocellular Jaundice
- Obstructive ( Post hepatic) Jaundice
what is the treatment of neonatal jaundice
exposure of the newborn skin to blue fluorescent light which converts bilirubin to more polar & hence water soluble isomers that can be excreted into bile without conjugation to glucuronic acid
what is neonatal jaundice?
is when bilirubin accumulates as bilirubin glucoronyl transferase low at birth( mainly premature) and uncounted bilirubin increased in blood
what is the source of bilirubin?
broken down rbc and Hb released then ham group is converted to bilirubin which is bound to albumin (insoluble)
