Compliance

Conventional
What is generally
believed/done/followed.
It is conventional to eat your breakfast in
the morning.
Utopic
A place/state where everything is
ideal and perfect.
The **utopic **society was one of complete
happiness and peace.
Dehumanising
To prevent somebody from
receiving their human
rights/qualities.
You shouldn’t dehumanise people, you
should treat them with respect.
Tyrannical
To be powerful but in a cruel and
harsh way.
He hated working for a tyrannicall boss
Captivate
To influence/dominate, usually with charm.
The beauty of the art captivated the audience
Swathed
To wrap in several layers of
something.
The nurse** swathed** the injury in multiple
bandages.
Lacerate
To cut or tear something.
Her face and hands were lacerated by the
flying glass.
Jolted
To cause something or someone
to move suddenly and violently.
The train stopped unexpectedly, and we were jolted forwards
Formidable
Creating fear or respect due to
being powerful/large.
The formidable force of the storm was too much for them to cope with.
Personification
Describing an inanimate object as having human feelings.
The sky wept joyless tears on the people below.
Metaphor
A descriptive technique that names a person, thing or action as something else.
Nature is a mother to us all
Simile
A descriptive technique that compares one thing with another, usually using ‘as’ or ‘like‘.
His pupil flexed like the lens of a mad eye.
Verb
A word that typically shows an action or state.
She was running.
He kicked the ball.
Adjective
A describing word, typically used to give us more information about a noun.
Her beautiful hair.
His fantastic effort.
