weeds and smapling Flashcards
what are the tree sampling methods?
- random sampling
- systematic sampling
- stratified sampling
what is random sampling?
random sampling is when samples are taken at random areas within a habitat, usually when a habitat is very large with limited time.
what is systematic sampling?
systematic sampling is usually taken along a transect line in marked intervals.
what is the transect line method?
uses a transect line marked at particular points where these areas are marked is where sampling is done.
what is the belt method?
a belt method is where quadrants are placed on marked areas of a transect line, in each quadrant is where sampling is done.
what is stratified sampling?
stratified sampling is the sampling of a particular populations within separate areas of a habitat.
what is biochar?
biochar is the burning of materials such as wood in a low oxygen oven so that large carbon dioxide amounts stay in the charcoal to be spread throughout the soil as added nutrients for the soil.
why are weeds good indicators?
because they have a very large tolerant range they suggest the health of the soil
three reasons why weeds are bad
- they are competitive, meaning they can over compete with native flaura
- they can allow the water table to rise because of their small root system
- they grow fast so they can overrun an ecosystem
three reasons why weeds are beneficial
- they help with drainage of the soil
- protect topsoil from the erosion of wind and rain
- because of their short life spans, when they die their decomposition allows for nutrients to absorb into the soil and be used by other plants.
what is monitoring?
monitoring involves measuring changes that take place over time within an ecosystem.
what is a monitoring program?
a monitoring program is a way of identifying how and when environmental indicators should be measured
why is monitoring important (2 reasons)
- indicates whether environmental conditions, pressures or responses are stable
- can lead to improvement in management practices
what is the difference between a standard and monitoring?
surveying is done without any standards in mind to compare to.
what is a baseline?
a baseline is used to identify what a system would be like before human intervention.
