WED & Topography Flashcards
Weathering
Is the process that breaks down rock.
Is a destructive process
Erosion
Is the movement of sediment from one place to another.
Deposition
Is the laying down of sediment that has been eroded (Is a constructive process)
Meander
A bend in a river
Delta
A fan shaped deposit in a larger body of water.
Alluvial Fan
A fan - shaped deposit on dry land.
Floodplain
A level strip of land on the sides of a river, made by sediments that are deposited during flooding.
Oxbow Lake
A meander that gets cut off from a river.
Constructive
A process that builds up (ex. Deposition)
Destructive
A process that breaks down rock into sediment (ex. weathering)
Benchmark
A location whose exact elevation is known
Contour Interval
Is the difference in elevation between each line on a topographic map.
Contour Line
It connects points of equal elevation on a topographic map.
Index Contour
It is usually every 5th line on the topographic map, is darker, & lists the elevation.
Topographic Map
A two - dimensional model of the Earth’s surface.
