Franklin states that the morals behind the spirit of capitalism are values and should be treated as such. Suggests that capitalism breeds survival of the fittest
Weber- Define the concept of the Calling and how it relates to the spirit of capitalism
Luther’s concept of the calling suggests that God calls upon us to perform as well as possible in our duties. This relates to the spirit of capitalism as it was believed that God was calling us to make as much money as possible and fulfil the spirit of capitalism.
Weber- How does modern capitalism relate to the Protestant ethic?
Modern capitalism does not rely on the Protestant ethic, as capitalism has become such an important part of our society as an independent entity; we rely on success within capitalism too much to not adhere to it
Weber- Define predestination and its relation to capitalism
Calvin’s concept of predestination suggested that God had already chosen who was going to heaven. He suggested that wealth in life meant you were going to heaven. This idea bred constant self observation and good behaviour, just in case people were going to heaven. Reliance on this theory lessened upon the rise of capitalism
Weber- What is the iron cage?
The belief that an over reliance on capitalism will result in social demise
Weber- Define the Spirit of Capitalism
