What advice to give people wanting natural contraception
- Not very effective, would be recommended to be on another form of contraception
- Changes in hormones, mucous and temperature can indicate ovulation
- day 14 - decrease viscosity, increased volume of mucous
- temp starts to increase slightly
- 28 days , ovulation is normally 14 days before next menstrual period due ?? - ask someone
3 questions to ask someone breast feeding
- Have your periods returned?
- are you supplementing or leaving long periods between breast feeds?
- is your baby more than 6 months old?
–> mothers chance of pregnancy is increased - used contraception (safe for baby)
- What is in each form of contraception ( how does it work)
- How long it lasts
- disadvantages / advantages

What to ask in history when talking about contraception?
- History for risk factors (blood clots in family, stroke, heart attack , DVT, smoking >35)
- Ask what the patients thoughts on contraception are and if she has any ideas on what she would like to use?
- discuss best options
- implant
- IUD - heavy bleeding
- pill taking/ forgetful
- depo provera - injection scare - explain how to use
- do BMI, BP, ask about migranes
Benefits of sterilisation compared to LARCs?
Permanent - if dont want any more children
tubal ligation essure hysterectomy - low failure rates -must be 100% sure of no more children -can get ectopic
Emergency contraceptive advice
Indications -LMP - determine ovulation (cycle 28 days, LMP in last 12-16 days - could be)
-Efficacy - how long it has been
Mechanism - prevents ovulation
side effects - N/V - if vomit withoin 3 hrs, take another dose
3-4 weeks - preg test
contraception now
-copper IUD (5days) - prevents implantation if sperm and egg have meet, cannot use if PID or infection - so need to ttest
-women should get a period within one month of ECP use, it may be a week earlir or lataer than normal, coudl also get unexpected bleeding
