Web Design Concepts Flashcards
Gestalt Principles
The Gestalt Theory of Perception: the mind is hardwired to perceive the “unified whole” or the sum of all parts instead of the individual pieces.
Similarity
items that which share a visual characteristic are perceived as more related than items that are dissimilar
Proximity
Elements that are near each other are perceived as related.
Elements spaced apart are perceived as belonging to separate groups.
Closure
people will fill in blanks to perceive a complete object whenever an external stimulus partially matches that object.
Connectedness
elements connected to each other are perceived as part of the same unit
Common Fate
Objects that are synchronized or coordinated in movement are likely to be grouped as one
Continuation
the eye tends to follow visual paths and sequences in order to identify relationships between designed elements
Visibility of System Status
Humans expect to recieive feedback from a system to indicate its status
Match between the system and the real world
System should speak the users language and follow real world conventions and information appears in a logical order
User Control & Freedom
Support undo and redo, give users the ability to easily navigate a system to include canceling/undo
Consistency and Standards
Maintain consistency across a system to improve user expectations
Error Prevention
Designs that prevent undesired actions (making it too easy to call someone when messaging)
Recognition vs Recall
Recognition is verifying that the information is correct instead of directly asking for that information. Recognition has more cues than recall.
Flexibility and Efficiency of Use
