Weathering And Erosion Flashcards
What are the fluvial processes?
Erosion, transport, deposition
How is material transported?
Traction, suspension, saltation and solution resulting in small particles reaching the mouth of the river and into coastal landscape system
Similar to coasts, most erosion in a river occurs at times of…
high flow/flood where there is a lot of energy
The meeting of fresh and saltwater causes
Flocculation of clay particles
Freeze thaw
Water enters cracks. Freezes and expands by nearly 10%. Exerts pressure causing it to split into pieces.
Pressure release
When overlying rocks are removed by weathering and erosion, the underlying rock expands and fractures parallel to the surface.
Thermal expansion
Rocks expand when heated and contract when cooled. The outer layer flakes off of this occurs regularly.
Salt crystallisation
Solution of salt can seep into the pore spaces in porous rocks. Salts precipitate, forming crystals. The growth of crystals creates stress in the rock causing it to disintegrate.
Abrasion
Pebbles grind along (sand paper effect)
Attrition
When rocks being transported knock against each other. Break apart becoming smaller and rounder
Solution
Chemicals in the water dissolve certain types of rocks
