Weathering and erosion Flashcards
What is weathering?
Weatheringis any process that breaks down rocks and creates sediments
Whats the two different types of weathering?
Chemical and mechanical
What is mechanical weathering?
Mechanical (physical) weatheringis the breakdown of rock into smaller pieces.
What is chemical weathering?
Chemical weatheringis decomposition of rock caused by chemical reactions resulting in formation of new compound.
Cause of weathering?
Water, ice, wind, animals, plants.
Cause of erosion
Erosion can occur due to gravity, moving water, glaciers, waves and wind.
What is erosion?
Erosion refers to the removal of particles (rock and soil) which have been broken down by weathering.
What is deposition?
Deposition refers to the laying down of sediments from erosion.
Results of deposition
Deposition results in landforms such as sand dunes, riverbeds and basins.
