Weathering Flashcards
Thermal Expansion
During the day rocks absorb heat causing them to expand and at night the heat radiates away causing the rock to contract
Rebounding
When deeply buried rock is exposed by erosion the release of pressure causes the rock to crack parallel to its surface. The outer part may peel away like an onion
Abrasion
Rocks bump into each other when they fall or are carried away creating smaller smoother pieces
Water
Dissolving
Dissolves certain rocks
Water
Absorbing
The rock absorbs water and expands
Water
Hydration
Water combines with other materials to create new compounds
Oxidation
Materials combine with oxygen to make new compounds
Carbonic acid
Carbon dioxide in the air Reacts to water to make a weak acid which dissolves some rocks.
Living organisms
Acids from organisms dissolve some minerals
Weathering
A chemical or mechanical process in which rocks exposed to the weather are worn down By Water wind or ice
Erosion
The carrying away of weathered materials, such as Rock, soil, etc.
Runoff
Excess water that is not absorbed by soil, which Then collects and flows over the ground
Groundwater
Water That collects beneath the surface
Deposition
A process in which the eroded materials are deposited or dropped
Physical weathering
The size of the rock changes from large to small. The composition of the rock is not affected.
