Weathering Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 types of weathering?
A
- Chemical (decomposition)
- Mechanical (disintegration
- Biological
2
Q
Define weathering
A
The decomposition and disintegration of rocks in situ (where they are)
3
Q
What enhances chemical weathering?
A
Hot and wet climates
4
Q
What enhances mechanical weathering?
A
Cold and wet climates
5
Q
What is freeze thaw weathering?
A
Occurs when water trapped in joints and cracks freezes at 0°C.
As this happens the water exerts pressure as it expands by 10%.
As the ice melts, the rock will have weakened.
6
Q
What is thermal fracture weathering
A
Large diurnal temperature change, leading to expansion and contraction
7
Q
What is scree?
A
Frost scattered rocks found at the bottom of a cliff/mountain
8
Q
What is salt crystal growth?
A
