Weathering Flashcards
1
Q
What is weathering?
A
When rocks are broken up into parts. Ultimately sand/soil are formed.
2
Q
2 types of Physical weathering?
A
Frost shattering
Exfoliation due to unloading
3
Q
What is frost shattering?
A
Rain water gets into cracks, freezes and expands. Putting pressure and cracking the rock.
4
Q
Exfoliation due to unloading?
A
Caused by igneous rock deep underground. When the above of the rock is worn away the rock expands and cracks the surface.
5
Q
Carbonation (Chemical)
A
Occurs in folamite and limestone. Rain mixes with CO2 and then rock becomes soluble and dissolves into the earth’s surface.
6
Q
Oxidation
A
Rocks contain iron interacts with oxygen rust. It makes it weak and a reddish colour.
