weathering Flashcards
What is weatheing
The breaking down of rocks
Physical weathering
No chemical chnage. Abrasive action of water and detritus. Wind + glaciers
Chemical weathering
Solution and carbonation. Causes rock to decompose chemcially.
Examples of physcial weathering
- Temperature change (expansion and contraction).
- action of ice
- biological acivity
Examples of chemical weathering
Oxidation: water and rocks form iron oxide
Hydrolysis: acidic groundwater and silicate minerals form clay
Weathering is controlled by
ROCK TYPE
How do igneous rocks chemically weather
Minerals chemically weather in order of crystallisation
Fine grain =
Weathers easier
How does EROSION move rocks
Moves weathered rocks by: Gravity Running water Wind Glaciers Sea currents
Erosion is ….
Deposited elsewhere as sediments
What is soil
Reaidue from chemical weathering deposited as sediments.
