Weathering Flashcards
Weathering
the breaking down of rock into smaller particles by physical, chemical and biological processes
Physical weathering
Where there is a daily temperature range (hot during the day and cold at night.)
Exfoliation
The repeated cooling and heating which causes the rocks outer layer to peel off
Pressure release (unloading)
a result of rocks which form deep within the crust are exposed to Earths surface
Where does physical weathering take place?
In regions where there are changes in temperature mostly seen in deserts
Where does freeze-thaw weathering occur?
In cold areas with day temperatures above freezing and night below freezing
Where does chemical weathering take place?
In all areas where there is rain ,usually in equatorial regions
What is Erosion?
The removal of weathered material by the actions of rivers, waters, waves, wind and moving ice
What are the agents of erosion? 3Ws
Water, Wind, Waves and Moving Ice
What is deposition?
The laying down of solid material in the form of sediment .
