Weather Vocabulary Flashcards
Air pressure
Force pit on a surface of weight on the air
Atmosphere
The envelope of gases surrounding planets
Barometer
An instrument used for measuring atmospheric pressure
Barometric pressure
Also atmospheric pressure
Celsius
The scale temperature were water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees
Climate
The weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period
Cumulus
A cloud forming rounded masses heaped on each other above a flat base
Cumulonimbus
a cloud forming a towering mass with a flat base at fairly low altitude and often a flat top, as in thunderstorms.
Dew point
Atmospheric temperature (varying according to pressure and humidity) below which water droplets begin to condense and dew can form
Drought
A prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall; a shortage of water resulting from this.
Freezing point
the temperature at which a liquid turns into a solid when cooled.
Front
boundary separating two masses of air of different densities
Funnel Cloud
rotating funnel-shaped cloud forming the core of a tornado or waterspout.
Global Warming
gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants
Hail
pellets of frozen rain that fall in showers from cumulonimbus clouds
