Weather Vocabulary Flashcards
The weight of the air as measured at a point on the earths surface
Air pressure/ barometric pressure
Precipitation is water (can be rain, sleet, snow, hail) deposited on the air surface
Atmospheric moisture
Results from the flow of air that replaces warm, rising air and the rapid movement of replacement air
Convection
Caused by rising, heated, moisture-laden air (rain or hail can occur)
Convectional precipitation
Occurs in mid-altitudes as cool and warm air masses meet
Cyclonic (frontal) precipitation
Wind direction and the differences in density of water causes water to move in paths from one part of the ocean to another
Ocean currents
Occurs as warm air is forced to rise because of some obstruction (hill or mountain)
Orographic precipitation
Occur with differences in air pressure between areas that induce air to flow from areas of high to areas of low pressures
Pressure gradients
Occur whenever two air masses come into contact
Storms-cyclone, hurricane, tornado
Prevailing surface wind movements responding to pressure gradients
Wind belts-jetstream, monsoon
