Weather Vocab. 🌏 Flashcards
What is air pressure?
The force that air puts on an area.
What is the atmosphere?
Layers of gas that surround a planet.
This a tool used to measure air.
A barometer.
What is barometric pressure?
The pressure of the atmosphere against an object.
What does Celsius mean?
Celsius is a scale on which temperature is measured. On this scale, 0 degrees is freezing, and 100 degrees is boiling.
This is a description of the average weather condition in a region over a long period of time. Example the desert has a dry, hot _______, and the rainforest has hot, wet _______ .
Climate.
What is a cloud.
Clouds are tiny drops of water in air. These drops get too heavy, they fall to earth as rain.
What is a cumulus cloud?
Clouds that look like cotton flat at bottom and round in the top
This happens at night when the moisture settles on grass and becomes dew.
Dew point
What is a drought?
A long period with no rain
What is a freezing point
The state that water needs to be in to freeze
This is a storm with strong rain and winds that forms over tropic waters.
A hurricane
What is a front?
The boundary between two air masses.
This is a rotating funnel shaped cloud that doesn’t touch the ground.
Funnel cloud
What is global warming?
The slow change of earth’s warming due to climatic change.
These are icy balls that fall from the sky.
Hail.
This is the study of weather patterns.
Meteorology.
This is rain, sleet, snow, hail, and freezing rain.
Precipitation.
What is thunder.
The loud sound that occurs when lightning heats up the air and it expands and contrasts quickly.
What is a thunderstorm.
A weather system that produces heavy wind, rain, and lightning.
This is a funnel shaped column of cloud or air that rotates and causes mass destruction.
Tornado.
The measure of how wet the air is.
Humidity
A region of low air pressure with counter-clockwise rotation.
Tropic depression.
A hurricane or tropic storm that starts in the tropics.
Typhoon
The state of precipitation, temperature, wind speed, and humidity.
Weather
What is a cumulonimbus cloud?
An anvil shaped storm cloud. (Also called thunderheads)
