Weather Unit Vocab Flashcards
Weather
The state of the atmosphere at a given time and place
Meterology
Study of the atmosphere including weather
Precipitation
Falling of ANY form of water from the air to the Earth’s surface
Humidity
The amount of water vapor in the air
Clouds
High fogs, mist, or haze
Atmosphere
Mixture of gasses that surround the Earth’s surface
Air Pressure
The force of air pressing on a given area
Wind
The ground surface heats the air above it. The warm air rises and cooler air moves in to take its place. This causes wind.
Temperature
The measure of the average kinetic energy of a group of particles
Thermometer
Measures temperature
Barometer
Measures air pressure
Anemometer
Measures wind speed
Hygrometer
Measures humidity
Wind Vane
Shows wind direction
Cirrocumulus
High clouds that looked like balls of cotton bunched together
Cumulonimbus
Low clouds that rise because of warm air. Usually the cloud that hail forms in
Altocumulus
Middle clouds that are small, white, and puffy
Stratus
Low clouds that look like streaks and don’t produce much precipitation
Exosphere
-The farthest layer of the atmosphere
-Where sattelites fly
-Has the least amount of air molecules
Thermosphere
-The 2nd to last layer of the atmosphere
-Where the auroras and northern lights occur
Mesosphere
-The 3rd layer of the atmosphere
-Shooting stars happen here
Statosphere
-The 2nd layer of the atmosphere
-Has the Ozone layer
-Planes fly here
Troposphere
-Lowest layer of the atmosphere
-Planes fly here
-Where all precipitation occurs
Conduction
heat is transferred from the ground to anything that it is touching, including air and water
