Weather Symbols And Tools Flashcards
Air Mass
A large body of air with similar properties through it.
Maritime Polar Air
Cold and humid air
Continental Polar Air
Cold and dry air
Maritime Tropical Air
Warm and humid air (wet)
Continental Tropical Air
Warm and dry air
Fronts
Fronts are boundaries between two air masses. Fronts are where weather happens and they are moved by wind.
Cold front
Cold air mass meets and causes a warm air mass to rise. They are fast moving and reduce strong and heavy precipitation. They bring cooler temperatures.
Warm air
Warm air mass meets and overrides a cold air mass. Warm air moves over cold air. They bring long periods of light drizzle and bring warmer temperatures.
Anemometer
An anemometer measures wind speed.
Hygrometer
A hygrometer measures moisture in the air. (Humidity)
Barometer
A barometer measures air pressure.( Low pressure- rain)( high pressure- sunny/ fair weather)
Rain Gauge
A rain Gauge measures the amount of rainfall.
Radar
A radar measures wind and precipitation inside a storm.
Wind vane
Shows the direction of wind
Occluded front
When a cold front overtakes a warm front
Stationary front
It is when air masses are not strong enough to overtake one another.
Weather
A state in the atmosphere that happens over short period of time
Climate
Weather happening over along period of time; 30 years
Thermometer
Measures the temperature in the atmosphere
