Weather services Flashcards
What are Surface Aviation Weather Observations
Compilations of elements of the current weather at individual ground station across the United States
What is a Upper Air observation
Radiosonde observation, PIREPS, AMDAR,MDCRS.
What are the 4 different types of Radar observation?
- WSR-88D nexrad(DOPPLER RADAR)
- TDWR (Terminal Doppler Weather Radar)
- FAA Airport surveillance
- Airborne Radar
What is a WSR-88D NEXRAD DOPPLER
Provides in- depth observation that informs surrounding communities of impending weather.
What do upper air observations report
Air temp, Moisture, pressure, wind, direction
What is a Terminal Doppler Weather Radar?
Informs of severe weather, EX: Wind shear, gust front.
What does FAA Airport Surveillance Radar do?
Detects aircrafts and location and intensity of precipitation
What is a Airborne Radar?
Radar carried by aircrafts to determine precipitation
What is a satelite
an artificial body placed in orbit around the earth or moon or another planet in order to collect information or for communication
What is the Flight Service Station (FSS)
Primary source of pre-flight weather information
What is Telephone Information Briefing Station (TIBS)
Automated telephone recording of meteorological and aeronautical infromation
What are the 3 different types of weather briefings
- Standard
- Abbreviated
- Occluded
What can a standard briefing provide
Provides the most complete information and a more complete weather picture. Should be done prior to flight
What is a Abbreviated Briefing
Shortened version of the standard brief usually requested when delayed or need weather update
What is an occluded brifeing
Occluded Briefing are requested when departure is 6 hours or greater.
provides initial forecast
