Weather Patterns Flashcards
Convection currents
The current rising and falling creating winds
Sea breeze
A wind only happening at day, the warm air over land rises and gets replaced by cool air over sea, and then goes over sea and cools to replace warm air over land that rose
Land breeze
A wind only happening at night, the warm air over sea rises to be replaced by the cool air from over land and then traveled over land and cools, to replace cool air that moved to replace the warm air over sea
Coriolis effect
The rotation of the earth causes objects in the northern hemisphere to deflect to the right and the objects in the Southern Hemisphere to deflect left. Goes east-west says eeeeeewwwwwww
Jet Stream
A band of fast winds caused by change in temperature moves west-east says wwwwwweeeeee
Trade winds
Blow to the equator Bing cold air from poles Helps sailors Brings tropical storms Gains moisture
Doldrums
A spot near the equator with few winds
Traps sailors
Prevailing winds
Blow away from equator
Bring warm air or water to poles
Prevailing westerlies
Blow away from equator
Found in USA
Polar easterlies
Found at poles
Blow east to west
El Niño
Pacific Ocean
Hot
Warms up climate
Cause of drought
La Niña
Pacific coast
Makes rain
Cools down climate
Gulf Stream
East to west
Brings warm air or water to poles
