Weather N Climate KQ1 KQ2 Flashcards
What are the elements of weather?
- Temperature
- Relative humidity
3.clouds - Precipitation
- Air pressure
- Wind
What are the factors affecting Temperature?
- Latitude
- Altitude
- Distance from the sea
- Cloud cover
Types of rain?
Conventional- influenced by temp on ground
Relief - influenced by the terrain
What is classified as high and low Rainfall?
High- 1 500 mm of Rainfall n above
Low - below 250 mm of Rainfall
What are the characteristics of an equatorial climate?
- High mean annual temp (20-30)
- Small annual temp range under 5
- High total annual Rainfall (>1000 to >2000mm)
- High HR thru out the year (over 80%)
What are the characteristics of monsoon climate?
- High mean annual temp (but less than equatorial climate)
- High annual precipitation (1000-2000)
- High lvls of Rainfall during wet season but much lower lvls during dry season
4 RH is over 80% during wet season, moderate during dry season
What are the characteristics of cool temperate climate?
- Moderate mean annual temp (10-15)
- Large annual temp range (abt 25), with 4 seasons
- Low to moderate annual precipitation (300-900mm)
- Low monthly precipitation thruout Yr, no distinct wet/dry
- Moderate RH (70-80)
What is used to record temperature?
- Thermometer
- Stevenson screen
What is used to find RH?
Sling psychrometer
What is used to measure precipitation
Rain gauge
Equipment to measure wind speed?
Anemometer
Instrument to measure wind direction?
Wind vane
Instrument to measure air pressure?
Barometer
How does air move? (High to low or low to high?)
Higher pressure to lower pressure
How does latitude affect Temperature
Thr temperatures decrease as the latitude increases. This is due to a smaller angle of incidence causing the energy to be more spread out thus the temperatures decrease
How does cloud cover affect the temperatures? (Presence of clouds)
During the day, large portions of the sun’s energyis reflected back to space. Clouds absorb heat from earth’s surface, thus at night the trapped heat keeps earth surface warm
How does cloud cover affect temp? (Absence of clouds)
No clouds results in large amt of the sun’s energy reaching the earth, causing the surface to heat up quickly. At night, with no clouds allows more heat to be radiated from earth’s surface n escape to space, causing cooler temps
How does altitude affect temp??
-temp decreases w altitude
-short wave radiation, 45 percent is absorbed by surface
-long wave radiation, surface admits heat, further up u go, further from surface
- air closer to surface aborbs more LWR
- air is less dense higher, traps less heat
Does distance from sea affect temp
Yes
Relative humidity formula percentage
Act amt of water vapour in air divide by max amtof water vapour the air can hold x100%
